Overcoming Fear of the Unknown
I often set certain tasks or obligations aside when I feel intimidated or lack confidence. Even though I have the full capability to complete these tasks, it takes me months or even years to realize it. While I know this happens frequently in my life, the moment I recognized I needed to change was when I hadn’t updated the expiration date on my license plate simply because I didn’t think I could remove the plastic cover surrounding it. I had every ability to do so, but the idea that I just couldn't do it was easier to accept than actually following through.
When I left Key West and moved to a more populated area, I was anxious about being pulled over every time I got in the car because, technically, I was driving around with an expired license plate tag. This anxiety ultimately motivated me to grab the tool I needed and follow through. I removed the plate in five seconds, and in one minute, the issue that had caused me months of anxiety was resolved. At that moment, I promised myself I wouldn’t put anything off. I wouldn’t waste time believing I couldn't do something when I hadn't truly tried.
Making the choices that you're afraid to make is where growth occurs. Doing something out of your comfort zone is how you learn and grow. I know this, yet I continue to fear the unknown. I leave messages on delivered, emails in drafts, and projects incomplete because of fear. I’ve realized that there will always be another obstacle. It doesn't end with the first or second one; it’s a constant battle that we must fight and win.
I'm determined to end this cycle of procrastination and fearing the unknown. I've often found myself thinking that I'm incapable without even trying. But now, I'm committed to completing tasks and tackling obstacles as they come my way, rather than putting them off. It’s a battle with the mind. Remember, you are not your thoughts. So if you're holding yourself back, stop. Do what you think you can’t, step out of your comfort zone, and be the person deep down you know you can be. The truth is, the power is within you. Face the unknown with determination and confidence.
This week, choose one small task that you've been putting off due to intimidation or fear. Something that seems simple yet significant to you. Set a specific time and date to tackle it and commit to following through. For instance, if you have an email that you've been hesitant to send, schedule a time to draft and send it. Remember, the goal here is to take action, no matter how small, and to prove to yourself that you can overcome the barriers you've set. Celebrate your accomplishment, no matter how minor it may seem, as it is a step toward breaking the cycle of procrastination.
