Taking Control of Your Life Narrative

Creating your own life often feels boring or generic. Many people confine themselves to a box due to the norms we grew up believing. We are taught to go to school until we turn 18, then head to college and choose a degree at that age, which we may not even start working in until we are 22, if we're lucky. By then, we may have spent four or more years studying, stressing, and crying, only to find ourselves in a field that no longer resonates with who we are. How can anyone be expected to choose a lifelong career at just 18 years old? After graduation, many find themselves stuck in the same restaurant or retail jobs they held at 16. Despite holding a degree, securing a job in a related field can be incredibly challenging without prior experience. Life may seem overwhelmingly difficult and seemingly impossible at times.

However, perhaps this isn't what life truly is. Perhaps this is the life that society has manipulated us into believing we must lead. In reality, you are in charge of your own life; you just need to wake up and realize it. Growth happens in discomfort, so embrace what makes you uneasy. Be the person you never thought you could be and do the things you once believed were unattainable because life is too short to live someone else's version of it.

Life is what you make of it, and it took me a while to understand that I was in control of my own narrative. Coming from somebody who is young, you don’t have to follow advice from someone living a life you don’t want. While people can have opinions about your choices, remember that you’re the one living your life, so prioritize what feels right for you. Take everything with a grain of salt; listen to the advice your peers offer, but ultimately, it’s up to you to decide the direction you want to take.

Life is like a game, where our choices and decisions shape our future. With dedication and discipline, you can genuinely become the person you aspire to be. Even when you face setbacks, those mistakes can illuminate your journey toward your true calling. They provide essential lessons that shape your character. Embrace these moments; they are vital to your growth and success.
